A very nice, accessible translation of this Stoic classic。 Lots of wisdom is to be discovered here。 If you are just starting your journey into ancient Stoic philosophy, this and the Enchiridion of Epictetus are wonderful starting places。

Brilliant! This should be the hand book for life。
Gyan Vaibhav,

Worth reading but not a great introduction to Stoicism。 As a private diary this book was never intended for publication。 A better introduction to this material is through a modern commentator like William Braxton Irvine。

I've read many passages and excerpts from the Meditations over the past few years, but only just now have read the work in its entirety。 My impression of the work has changed somewhat from the one I gained by encountering it in a fragmentary fashion。Based on my study of Stoicism, I would hesitate to call this a work of Stoic philosophy。 As many have pointed out, Marcus does not appear to refer to himself as a Stoic and the term comes up only once in the Meditations, and it is a passing reference I've read many passages and excerpts from the Meditations over the past few years, but only just now have read the work in its entirety。 My impression of the work has changed somewhat from the one I gained by encountering it in a fragmentary fashion。Based on my study of Stoicism, I would hesitate to call this a work of Stoic philosophy。 As many have pointed out, Marcus does not appear to refer to himself as a Stoic and the term comes up only once in the Meditations, and it is a passing reference。 This work is neither an exposition of philosophy nor a unified whole aiming at some main theme or question to be answered。 It is rather the author's response to the stresses he encountered in the last decade or so of his life。 Marcus' response to these stresses is certainly more Stoic than it is not, but he himself freely admits that he is not so concerned with systematic philosophy: what matters to him is being able to confront and deal with the harshness of daily existence。As Gregory Hays points out in his introduction, there is not much joy in the Meditations, nor is that what it is aiming for。 Marcus' goal was clearly ἀταραξία (ataraxia), tranquility。 There is a certain underlying pessimism throughout the work and an acceptance of the rotten state of the world, and the response that the world need not be rotten if we only learn not to view it as such。 One can readily feel that Marcus was writing far from home, in middle age and nearing death, on the frontiers of the Empire witnessing horrible suffering and death on a regular basis。 It is no wonder that he was so preoccupied with the pursuit of tranquility rather than happiness。 。。。more

Daria,
This edition became a finding for me, because of a modern translation, copious notes, and selection of personal letters between Marcus and his teacher Fronto。 I re-read Meditations for keeping my own sanity in tact, but the letters gave a sneak peek at the other Marcus, who is affectionate and sometimes cheeky, and more optimistic in comparison with his persona from Meditations。

Several months ago I had the pleasure of reading The Practicing Stoic, by Ward Farnsworth, and found that I identified with many of the principles of Stoicism。 The format of this book was a summary, by constituent topic, of the various aspects of stoicism, featuring numerous illustrative quotations from some of the giants of classic stoic thought。 Among them was the Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, whose Meditations consist of 12 Notebooks (essentially a journal he kept irregularly over a long ti Several months ago I had the pleasure of reading The Practicing Stoic, by Ward Farnsworth, and found that I identified with many of the principles of Stoicism。 The format of this book was a summary, by constituent topic, of the various aspects of stoicism, featuring numerous illustrative quotations from some of the giants of classic stoic thought。 Among them was the Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, whose Meditations consist of 12 Notebooks (essentially a journal he kept irregularly over a long time) of thoughts and exhortations of himself on how to lead a life of Virtue。 Having been impressed by the quotations from Marcus's writings which Farnsworth used in his book, I was very interested when this edition of Meditations was recently published and snapped it up。 Having now read it, I'm still impressed by Marcus's thought, but I must admit that I found his notebooks to be very repetitive, and in the end not adding much to what I learned from Farnsworth's book。 Therefore, I would recommend Meditations, well done and extensively footnoted though it is, only to those with a particular interest in Marcus the man as opposed to Marcus the Stoic。 Undeterred, though, I'm still interested in further reading on Epictetus and Seneca, other Stoic greats quoted by Farnsworth in his book。 。。。more

I liked what I read and it made sense。 And I even had this idea that I should read this book once a year as I would benefit from it。But I kind of got tired reading it。 And the things that the book talks about could be said in much shorter form。That's the trouble with any 'self help' book - be it written today or 2000 years ago。 All of the points could be summed up in a shorter series of bullet points。 I liked what I read and it made sense。 And I even had this idea that I should read this book once a year as I would benefit from it。But I kind of got tired reading it。 And the things that the book talks about could be said in much shorter form。That's the trouble with any 'self help' book - be it written today or 2000 years ago。 All of the points could be summed up in a shorter series of bullet points。 。。。more
